Located on West Zinfandel Lane between Rutherford and St. Helena, DICKERSON VINEYARD's 21 acres allows the traditional hand care and the meticulous attention to organic winegrowing possible for a small artisinal vineyard. Grapes are dry farmed, organically cultivated and harvested by hand. Vinified by Joel Peterson using naturally present vineyard yeasts and aged two years in small French cooperage.
Grapes are retained for 3 Estate Grown Proprietor's LIMITED RESERVE Wines of ZINFANDEL, MERLOT and an unique blend of CABERNETS. Remaining Zinfandel grapes sold to Ravenswood comprise their vineyard designated Dickerson Zinfandel.
Here is help to decipher our etched labels. In early Napa Valley wine making, before electrical power was available, a heavy lever beam was hinged in the trunk of an ancient oak beside our old winery. Hoisted to a branch over a basket press then released, the beam used gravity to press the wine. Wine making stopped with prohibition. The beam was lost. Cask hoops were discarded on the hinge and were eventually overgrown by the trunk. Imagine, a wine press invented for Egyptian pharaohs and little changed despite some 3000 years of continual use around the world at work in our vineyard! Every bottle of our LIMITED RESERVE bears this etched reminder in honor of wine's universality and tradition throughout our cultural history . THE RAVENSWOOD CONNECTION
I'm frequently asked if I am The Dickerson of Ravenswood's Dickerson Vineyard Designate Zinfandel. I am and have supplied the grapes for Ravenswood's Dickerson Zinfandel for the past two decades.
It is a pleasure to be a partner with Ravenswood owner and master vintner, Joel Peterson in both one of the first and foremost of Ravenswood's Vineyard Designate Zinfandels and in my own proprietor's wines. Joel is the master wine maker for all my LIMITED RESERVE DICKERSON VINEYARD as well as for the Ravenswood wines.
A friend for years, Joel and I have shared many happy times and enjoyed far more than our share of fine wines from around the world, many with his late father, Walter as well.
